Macon County Courthouse Context
The Macon County courthouse and county government complex is at 121 South Sumter Street in Oglethorpe, Georgia. The same address appears in the Probate Court contact block and in Superior Court or clerk sources. Probate Court is located on the first floor. The official county history states that the current courthouse was built in 1894, is the county's third courthouse, and is the second courthouse built in Oglethorpe. It describes the building as Romanesque Revival style.
The county seat history explains why older references can differ from modern court access. The first county seat was Lanier, selected by the inferior court in 1838 and incorporated that year. After the Central of Georgia Railroad was built through Oglethorpe in the 1850s, referendums occurred in 1854 and 1856, and the second vote led to the county seat moving to Oglethorpe the following year.
